Final Report Summary - PHOTONAVINET (Photoreception in Drosophila larvae: Information coding in a simple neuronal circuit)

Studying the fundamental mechanisms of information processing within defined neural circuits is critical to our understanding of how the brain functions. In the current project we used the comparably simple visual system of the fruit fly larva as model to study sensory coding principles and how a defined circuit controls behavioural output. By combing serial EM based connectomics, computer-based tracking analyses, physiological recordings with precise genetic manipulations we identified the wiring diagram of the circuit as well as the algorithm the neurons use to process visual information. Our results highlight core principles of how early visual systems function to integrate spatial and temporal coded information.
