Final Report Summary - SUSCATCU3 (Sustainable C-X and C-H Functionalization Catalyzed by Copper(III) Species)

Designing new methodologies in organic synthesis is at basis for the development of new pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals or materials in a sustainable manner. SUSCATCu3 project faced this problem from a mechanistic point of view in order to provide clues for the deep understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying many copper-catalyzed reactions reported. Among them, cross-coupling and C-H functionalization are especially important for their impact in the quest for new cheaper and less toxic metals than for the widely known and recognized palladium catalysis. In SUSCATCu3 we have demonstrated the viability of Cu(I)/Cu(III) two electron redox catalysis in model aryl halide and cyclized arene substrates, and the formation of new C-heteroatom bonds has been thoroughly investigated. We transferred this knowledge to standard substrates and investigated its mechanistic details. Moreover, SUSCATCu3 also provided clues on totally unprecedented two-electron redox reactivity for silver and gold. We have demonstrated that silver can engage in Ag(I)/Ag(III) redox cycles in cross-coupling reactions, which will open new avenues for designing Ag-catalyzed synthetic tools in organic synthesis. Nonetheless, gold can also engage in Au(I) oxidative addition processes in our model systems. We have discovered the first example of a Au(I)/Au(III) catalytic cycle that does not require any external oxidant. Additionally, the comprehension of C-H activation and functionalization processes catalyzed by transition metals has been also targeted, with special focus to first-row transition metals such as Cu, Ni and Co. All this fundamental knowledge provides new synthetic tools for the design of catalytic methodologies for sustainable organic transformations.
