The first low cost optical gas imager for fugitive emissions mitigation, increasing energy efficiency in industry

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - GaSeS (The first low cost optical gas imager for fugitive emissions mitigation, increasing energy efficiency in industry)

Reporting period: 2018-02-01 to 2019-01-31

Problem Addressed: the existing sensor ecosystem for gas leaks and escapes detection are not efficient enough to mitigate carbon footprint, prevent accidents or increase efficiency in operations because the number of employees that operate industrial sites has decreased and it is decreasing even more.
Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) is a technology for fugitive gas emissions detection. OGI allows the user to carry out a simple survey for observing gas leaks in components. Basically, an OGI image the gas using infrared spectrum, so it is very intuitive. Nevertheless, their penetration into regular activities of the operators is truncated by the high cost (> 100.000 €) and complexity.
Important for society: The absence of operators in the field must be balanced with new technology (otherwise gas emissions, accidents and inefficiencies will increase), designed under this new context. Most of the technology that are currently on service were designed 30 years ago, when much more operators and technicians were working on field. This change in the paradigm is going to happen and RedLook is very well positioned.
SENSIA has developed and qualified for commercialisation the first affordable OGI for a large-scale penetration into daily activities of the operators. SENSIA OGIs covers the market of energy, oil&Gas, utilities, detecting SF6 leaks, refrigerant, etc.
SENSIA OGIs are integrated in RedLook, a 24/7 Smart Monitoring solution that address the main challenges of the 4.0 industry, bring to the market a breakthrough technology covering with a single equipment a wide range of applications: Gas Detection, Fire detection, liquid spills…. In summary, SENSIA is now commercialising a complete solution for gas emissions monitoring and we have integrated further features to increase the willingness to pay of the customer such as: fire, thermography, surveillance, etc. The application cases go from handheld units, fix system for 24/7 monitoring and drone boarded.
The work developed during the project has been of a cross-cutting nature and with deep significance for SENSIA: GaSeS project is the most important challenge since its foundation and it has meant a change of perspective towards a much more ambitious positioning of the company.
Quality Management System (SENSIA's QS) has been implemented in accordance with the UNE-EN ISO 9001 standard, through which products, services and internal documents are managed in a coherent manner. In addition, the renewed coordination of the Technical and Administrative-Financial areas has ensured complying with the quality requirements of the European Commission.
Each GaSeS market-ready product responds to a specific use case. Both use approach and technical features have been carefully addressed and defined during the covered period. This has been a key task and it will stand out our products. This work of defining the designs and technical specifications has been achieved thanks to continuous narrow contact with some of the most important European corporations. This definition process has included field testing of initial prototypes, continuous follow-up with technical committees to address the most ambitious challenges and numerous turnarounds to achieve fully functional products according the real demands.
They main outcome that we obtained from the multiple meetings with final users that MULTIFUNCTIONALITY, RELIABILITY and AFFORDABILITY is a MUST for a monitoring system. At the same time, these three factors will be the differential feature of our technology in comparison with our competitors.
RedLook provides solution for the most demanding functionalities: gas detection (to detect industrial gases without shutting down systems and displaying these invisible gases as clouds of smoke), gas quantification (to monitor the mass flow rate of the gases detected, fire detection: to detect fire ignitions in their early stages), liquid detection (to detect liquid leaks), flare monitoring (to guarantee an optimal level of flare), flare efficiency (to provide detailed information about industrial flares flow, composition of gases and combustion efficiency), intelligent thermography (to provide temperature control system based on high accuracy thermography), surveillance (allows people monitoring for security and safety) and dead man alarm (to detect accidents of workers on duty). RedLook has been developed for a 3 different case of use: RedLook (case of use 2), RedLook Lite (case of use 1) and RedLook App (case of use 3). RedLook provides an user-friendly interface and high integrated Video Management System (VMS).
The Cases Of Use have been instrumented with several market ready products fulfilling different requests and aspects addressed by stakeholders. For the case of use 1 and 3, the Caroline X and Y have been developed and for the Case of use 2 the Caroline FX and FY, CalcifIR, Agni and Rai systems. All of them have been a consequence of the fine tuning coming from the prototypes developed on the WP3. The solutions performances have been deeply tested in real environments. After a verification and validation of the products by the stakeholders, the products have been certified for field and explosive atmospheres operation and CE marked.
At the same time, a Strategic Communication Plan has been implemented to transmit the ambitious plan that SENSIA intends to carry out through the GaSeS project: SENSIA plans to disrupt Leak, Detection and Repair (LDAR) practices through the introduction of an integral solution for fugitive emission mitigation. SENSIA's challenge is to re-educate the market towards the adaptation of OGI as a regularly used tool. GaSeS project has upgraded the Peer Positioning of the company in negotiation and discussion with stakeholders
SENSIA is convinced that its near future depends on the massive introduction of its equipment in the relevant markets. For this reason, an effort has also been made to achieve adequate marketing channels to start commercialization the equipment on Q1 of 2019. Very healthy pipeline has been building, but up to 1-year of maturing the opportunities has to be considered.
Within the global international context, SENSIA OGI product based on is the best positioned in terms of performance. SENSIA is the only company that has already shown evidences of uncooled OGI performance in relevant environments at key players facilities (TOTAL, REPSOL, ENAGAS, SUEZ, etc.). It brings to the market a new world of applications that will change the paradigm in the field of 4.0 Industry and sensorization. This transformation will require a deep market re-education to make them know about the new paradigm about Smart Monitoring: Just a single camera for multiple applications: gas, fire, liquid spills, flares, temperature, persons, etc.
SENSIA has demonstrated that with the right use of SENSIA technology, the reduction of the carbon footprint as well as the toxic vapours is dramatic at scale of facility. This fact will impact directly the environment and safety.
GaSeS project is enabling a deep level of developments at all levels: optical, electronics and mechanical. This fact makes SENSIA controlling the 70% whole manufacturing and integrating process of the OGI, just the detector manufacturing is carried out by third party (SCD). Thanks to GaSeS, SENSIA RedLook technology is nowadays positioned as one of the top-of-mind products for IR Monitoring.
