SMILE Report Summary

Project ID: 726799

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SMILE (Slimming and Memory-Booster MIcroaLgae Extract)

Reporting period: 2016-08-01 to 2017-12-31

Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The SMILE project Phase 2 aims at developing microalgae-based innovative natural marine ingredients based on recently discovered bioactive compounds, with scientifically demonstrated benefits on weight management and cognitive functions. Through an innovative and patented technology, MICROPHYT produces sustainably and markets unique bioactive compounds extracted from the untapped diversity of microalgae. SME Instrument Phase 2 first objectives are (i) production and characterization of several batches of SMILE ingredients (iii) demonstration of SMILE ingredients safety with required studies by authorities (iii) demonstration of SMILE ingredients benefits with pre-clinical and clinical studies.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

During the first period of SMILE program, MICROPHYT conducted the following activities:

1) Robust and repeatable implementation of the ingredient production.
First, MICROPHYT worked on the process and the formulation of SMILE ingredients. Then, MICROPHYT defined the quantity needed for each batch in order to guarantee a full characterization of SMILE ingredients, safety studies and efficacy studies. As a result, the required number of batches of each SMILE ingredients were successfully produced, fully characterized, enabling to launch safety and efficacy studies.

2) Full characterization of the ingredients confirm a unique composition in bioactive compounds.
Samples of each batch of SMILE ingredient were analysed in at least 10 different laboratories which represents around 1500 analysis in total. Data collected show that SMILE ingredient compositions are unique and consistent

3) Successful implementation of safety studies package.
After having selected the most relevant CRO (Contract Research Organization), each SMILE ingredient is currently under evaluation regarding safety with required safety tests. Studies were launched during summer 2017 and will be finished by spring 2018. MICROPHYT is ensuring the follow-up of all these study with weekly exchanges with the CRO. Current results obtained are very encouraging and promising.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

Main results are described in the previous section.
Besides, as regards socio-economic impacts of the SMILE project, MICROPHYT has implemented a communication strategy around the benefits of SMILE ingredients. A new website, featuring « Objective SMILE » video has been released. Also,
MICROPHYT is continuously working on improving quality management and sustainability. As an example, the company was awarded the EnVol label last April. This label is the result of a process initiated for several months and which engages the company sustainably in an action plan for the preservation of the environment.
