Final Report Summary - MORE (Advanced Mathematical Tools for Complex Network Engineering)

Many fields of network engineering evolve today towards a drastic increase of the network dimensions, a stochastic character of many of their components, and a larger numbers of agents organizing or using these networks. Examples of such networks are 5G and beyond 5G networks with the massive amount of connected devices (more than 1 million per km2) where one has to take into account the drastic constraints in terms of latency and reliability. Unfortunately, the classical engineering tools are not able to cope with these constraints. The ERC Starting Grant has developed a sound mathematical theory (a ‘Shannon like’ Mathematical Theory of Communications for large stochastic decentralized networks) combining Random Matrix Theory, Large Scale learning and Decentralized Stochastic optimization. The results have contributed to the design of key 5G and beyond 5G technologies such as Massive MIMO, Wireless Edge Caching, Big Data for Telecom, AI for Wireless and Energy efficient Wireless Networks. The project was awarded 14 awards among which the WUN CogCom Best Paper 2012 and 2013 Award, the 2014 WCNC best paper award, the 2015 ICC best paper award, the 2015 IEEE Communications Society Leonard G. Abraham Prize, the 2015 IEEE Communications Society Fred W. Ellersick Prize, the 2016 IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial paper award, the 2016 European Wireless Best Paper Award, the 2017 Eurasip Best Paper Award and the 2018 IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award as well as the Valuetools 2012 and SAM 2014 Best Student paper awards.
