Periodic Report Summary 2 - INCA (International Career Grant)

The Swedish Research Council (SRC) has established a mobility program for early career fellowships, called INCA (International Career Grant). The program aimed at having two calls (Y1 and Y2) to support the best young researchers with potential to become future research leaders. The SRC also aimed at taking an actively supporting role during the grant period, including leadership training and networking activities.
The objectives of the programme were; the programme should be open to all nationalities, the applicants have worked between two and seven years after their Ph.D. exam, they must have relation to Sweden (incoming or outgoing) and the grants should be administered by a Swedish university, by which the fellow will be employed.
The fellows from Y1 received funding for up to 4 years, including living allowance, mobility allowance and a project grant, they started their project in beginning of 2015. The fellows from Y2 received funding for up to 3 years, including living allowance, mobility allowance and a project grant, they started their project in beginning of 2016.
In March 2016 the SRC organized a leadership training course (5 days) for the 2015 call INCA fellows at Rosersberg in Stockholm. The program included leadership theory, leadership methods, group dynamics, how to be a leader, communication and dialogue, leadership in a research organization, self-reflection and how to build a vision. All fellows (except a few on parental leave) completed this one-week leadership course in Stockholm. In connection with the leadership course, a networking day for all INCA fellows was also arranged by the SRC. It included presentations from invited speaker on the topics of “Navigating through the early academic career” and “Ethics; history and cases” as well as testimonies from 2014 year´s INCA fellows and discussion and networking. In June 2016 the fellows themselves organized a two days’ workshop on academic leadership supported by the SRC.
