Periodic Report Summary 2 - IRBLLEIDA-IPP (IRBLLEIDA International Postdoctoral Programme)

The aim of the Biomedical Research Institute of Lleida (IRBLleida) is to set up a training programme addressed to highly talented and motivated experienced researchers to give them the opportunity to develop their research career at the Institute. Postdoctoral researchers are offered the opportunity to join one research group at the Institute and follow an individual research project under the supervision and mentoring of our group leader/s in a stimulating and multidisciplinary scientific environment. They have access to the Institute scientific facilities and scientific life.
The IRBLleida International Postdoctoral Programme (IRBLLEIDA-IPP; FP7-PEOPLE-2013-COFUND) offers 10 postdoctoral positions for a two year postdoctoral stay. The aim is to attract international talent to the five major research areas in IRBLleida: Stress in Biological Systems, Medicine and Experimental Therapeutics, Cellular and Molecular Models for Human Pathologies, Neuroscience and Experimental Medicine. The programme is actively and internationally promoted, as well as opens to worldwide researchers in an equal opportunity basis. Eligibility for the programme requires geographical mobility. The application procedure is simple, clear and applicant friendly. The evaluation is based on two stages (previous scientific achievements and research project) and the selection procedure is centered on the excellence of the candidates.
The main peculiarity of the program is consigned to the candidate him/herself and his/her research project role as principal investigator. Fellows joining IRBLleida under this programme have a two year employment contract, including full security coverage, which also includes health and accident insurance, pension and unemployment benefits. The contract is complemented with a travel allowance, a contribution to research costs and a complementary training programme to gain and develop non-scientific skills useful for the fellow’s career development.
Since the project started in February 2014, the IRBLleida launched three international calls for attracting talent: IRBLL-IPP-2014, IRBLL-IPP-2015 and IRBLL-IPP-2016. Currently, 9 postdoctoral researchers were selected and 7 of them are currently working in IRBLleida. In terms of gender, the institution and the IPP Programme follows a non-discrimination policy on the basis of age, ethnic, national o social origin, religion or belief, sexual orientation, language disability, political opinion or economic condition. The researchers selected in the three calls are 4 man and 5 women from different countries around the world, which have been selected on the basis of their excellence.
In the first call for applicants, IRBLL-IPP-2014, 2 Spanish candidates were selected among 48 total applications (25 eligible applicants). In the second call for applicants, IRBLL-IPP-2015, 1 Spanish national and 1 European fellow from Portugal were selected among 37 different applications (24 eligible applicants). One extra fellowship was also offered to the first reserve candidate in the reserve list, an international fellow from Argentina, due to the quality of the research project. In the third call for applicants, IRBLL-IPP-2016, 1 Mexican, 1 Venezuelan and 2 Indian fellows were selected among a total of 31 applications (18 eligible applicants).
