Final Report Summary - CHEMAGEB (CHEMometric and High-throughput Omics Analytical Methods for Assessment of Global Change Effects on Environmental and Biological Systems)

Combination of methodologies in three different scientific research fields, chemometrics, analytical–omics and environmental toxicology, have allowed the development of new procedures and tools for the evaluation of the effects of chemical pollutants and physical stressors on target representative biological organisms. In particular, in the frame of this project, different data compression, data pretreatment and data modeling tools have been developed to investigate and process massive data obtained by MS (like LC-MS, LC-LC-MS or MSI), NMR (1D and 2D) and DNA based (microarray, sequencing) analytical methods, and to extract from them environmental and toxicological information. Huge bio-environmental data sets generated by these experimental methodologies have been analysed by chemometric and multivariate data analysis methods, developèd in the context of this project. The potential application of these procedures has been shown in the study of the effects of diverse pollutants (like endocrine disruptors, pharmaceutical products or heavy metals) and climate change stressors (like temperature, water scarcity, or UV radiation) on different preselected target biological organisms representative of different environmental systems (like Daphnia magna, Zebrafish adults and embryos, roots and aerial parts of rice plants, yeast and cell cultures, and biological tissues). Integration of different type of omics (tanscriptomic + metabolomics) data has been proposed using different analytical platforms (like DNA dsequencing and LC-MS or NMR data fusion), and by the incorporation of biochemical computational models to achieve the final goal of environmental risk assessment. Once information was extracted from the experimental data sets, biochemical and environmental tyoxicology information is interpreted using a Systems Biology type of approach. The project was divided in 9 different main goals and comprised 47 specific tasks and achievements with their respective deliverables. 35 researchers have been involved working in the tasks of the project. A CHEMAGEB laboratory was established, where PhD and postdocs have been working in the different tasks of the project during its time life. About 80 research papers are estimated that will be finally published (67 are already published) in peer reviewed well recognized international scientific journals, and more than 100 communications in scientific meetings and congresses have been presented by the members of the research team showing the results achieved during the project.
