Study of environmental changes and diagenetic processes by use of structural and chemical characteristics of biominerals

Exploitable results

The objectives of the project were to set a new standard of control for the biominerals used as environmental records, in order to provide the laboratories that carry out isotopic measurements with the most reliable documents. An additional objective was to elaborate a more efficient control method to ensure the highest quality of used fossil records. The main result was that on selected case-studies it has been possible to show that understanding the macromolecula mineralizing matrice behaviours (formation and diagenetic stability) is the key-point to explain the influence of the environmental conditions on formation and transformation of biominerals. The results clearly indicate that improvements in the understanding of recent environmental changes can be obtained by concentration of analytical efforts on molecular and isotopic compositions of organic components of biominerals.
