Participation of the NIS in the European Forest Genetic Resources Programme

Exploitable results

This project will extend the activities of the European Forest Genetic Resources Programme (EUFORGEN) by including several NIS countries. These states will join on-going activities concerning conservation networks formed by EUFORGEN which was established in 1994 as an instrument for co operation on conservation of genetic diversity of European forests. Twenty European states are participating in EUFORGEN and an additional 10 countries are expected to join. The conservation networks, on the species Norway spruce (Picea abies), cork oak (Quercus suber), black poplar (Populus nigra), and noble hardwoods, were created and have the following tasks. The inventory of the situation regarding the genetic resources of the species concerned will be compiled. A European database to promote establishment of gene reserve forests in each participating country will be developed. In the framework it is planed to set up ex situ gene banks. Appropriate conservation strategies for the species concerned will be developed.
