Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The aim of HarsMeth is to provide the SMEs with a methodology for the hazard assessment of chemical processes. It provides assistance for the safety assessment of batch and semi-batch processes in an easy structured way by using basic rules and methods. The main part of HarsMeth represents a short-cut procedure that can be used as an interactive on-line tool. Next to it, a document containing different checklists for the thermal hazard evaluation of the process is available.

The assessment is based on safety data introduced by the user and gives general hints concerning hazardous process conditions. This methodology is thought to be used by engineers in SMEs who are not necessarily experts in the fields treated by HarsNet. For this reason, all the data required for the assessment are intended to be easy to determine from physical and chemical parameters of the substances involved, and thermokinetic data available through simple calorimetric experiments. In order to make the methodology meet the requirements of SMEs, during its preparation it has been tested by different European chemical companies.

The feedback obtained from these companies has been decisive in the final result of the task. The guide for risk assessment has been translated to Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, and French, and is available for download in the HarsNet web page. The interactive tool is also available for its use at the web page.
