High-precision hard turning of cemented carbides

The machining of fine grained cemented carbides on a lathe proved to be feasible and suitable for high-precision applications. In order to ensure that tolerances and surface qualities needed are achieved, a high-precision lathe, like a Hembrug 100 CNC or a Hembrug 50 CNC must be employed.

Besides positioning errors of the axes and spindle run-out under 0.1 µm, these Hembrug lathes show excellent thermal stability and vibration damping characteristics, since heat and vibration peripherals are isolated from the machine and its hydrostatic spindle and slides are mounted on a granite block.

A further development of these features consists in a high-precision lathe equipped with a high speed spindle and linear drives, whose stiffness and enhanced accuracy will help manufacturers of cemented carbide tools and components to produce the desired quality more efficiently and to meet their customers’ demands.
