Thale AV result 1

Thales Avioncs proposed two possible configurations and aircraft targets for a MOTIFES compliant IFE system. These architectures use Plastic Optical Fibre and IEEE 1394 technologies as support for the distribution network. Such architectures have been designed to address the need of IFE systems on medium haul (single aisle) and long-range haul (twin aisle). This simple solution is able to solve several airplanes configurations.
The commercial benefit is a new full digital IFE system with enhanced entertainment functions.
Its design will provide to Thales Avionics and its partners advantages on its concurrence. Its architecture will provide high bandwidth, less weight than an existent IFE system, a full digital system, a lower maintenance, a more flexible installation and no EMI. Moreover, the proposed system enables to integrate COTS technologies and products.
As an example of commercial target, the A380 will use optical fibber as the backbone of the distribution network. POF may be used because POF solves the major problems of EMI and installation.
A potential option of our IFE system is the combination with a video surveillance system based on COTS

SOCIAL BENEFITS:
The development of a new IFE system standard based on POF should favour the Development of POF industry in Europe.
Furthermore, such an innovative solution will bring a competitive advantage to the IFE industry in Europe, thus leading to develop the employment.
Less weight means lower power consumption, which makes this system an environmental friendly one.
SCIENTIFIC BENEFITS:
Better network throughput available at the seat using new POF technologies.
