Nexans is the worldwide leader in the cable industry. The Group brings an extensive range of advanced copper and optical cable solutions to the infrastructure, industry and building markets. Nexans cables and cabling systems can be found in every area of people’s lives, from telecommunications and energy networks, to aeronautics, aerospace, automobile, railways, building, petrochemical, medical applications, etc. With an industrial presence in 29 countries and commercial activities in 65 countries, Nexans employs 17,000 people and had sales in 2003 of euros 4 billion.

Our competence Centre in Lyon is developing and manufacturing Polymer Optical fibber P.O.F.). This new fibber was originally designed for Local
Area Network ( L.A.N.) inside building and present bandwidth characteristics close to silica , so it would be interested in switching silica fibber by POF to verify these performances.

Nexans Draveil is mainly working for aerospace market and specially for Airbus one.

We have developed and we are manufacturing optical cables for on-board equipment as ABS 0963-003 LF.

As this cable fulfil completely Airbus specification we evaluated this cable versus two new cables developed within Motifes:
Study 132666 with PMMA step index 1000µm fiber and Study 132667 with gradient index Cytop fibber 120/230/500 µm.

Main conclusions are for step index cable:
- Working temperature : - 55 + 105°C / 3000 Hours
- < 200 dB/km , > 15
- low variation of optical attenuation during temperature cycles
- low sensivity to tight bend radius
- easy to connect
- fire / smokes / toxicity in accordance with aerospace regulations

Other conclusions are for gradient index cable :
- Working temperature : - 55 + 70°C / 7000 Hours
- < 35 dB/km , > 400 close or better than silica
- low variation of optical attenuation during temperature cycles
- easy to connect (Nexans design and produce connector , easy to handle - withut glue and crimping )%l - fire / smokes / toxicity in accordance with aerospace regulations

Final conclusions could be:
- for multimedia purpose inside aircraft
- Gradient index cable could be used for backbone
- because of high bandwidth
- Step index cable could be used for links between backbone and seats

Gradient index originally designed for building has to be enhance specially for :
- working temperature range
- low sensivity to mechanical stresses.
