Strengthening Romanian Research Training Capacities in Biosensing and Related Areas

Final Report Summary - ROBIOS (Strengthening Romanian Research Training Capacities in Biosensing and Related Areas)

The main focus of the ROBIOS project was the reinforcement of International Centre for Bio-dynamics (ICB) RTD capacities in bio-sensing and related areas towards improved participation in Framework Programmes calls and other national/international initiatives. The indispensable components, infrastructure and human resources, lead to an increased visibility and attracting financial resources, the foundation of the proposed project, are seen as both target and main vectors for ICB development.

The scientific activities of ICB address a new interdisciplinary field concerning non-invasive, real time methods and related devices that enable monitoring of bioprocesses and (non) linear data analysis for characterisation of biosensors and bio-systems. The ultimate goal of this project, in accordance to the ICB strategy, is to boost the already existing high quality research capacity to better respond to the Seventh Framework Programme's call for proposal, society needs and to bridge the gap between industry and academia, in particular in bio-sensing applications to health, environment and food quality issues, by creating and supporting a pole of competence at the boundaries of the enlarged European Union.

Through-out the whole ROBIOS project, a special emphasis was placed on the activities concerning stabilisation and reinforcement of RTD potential through training, networking and exploitation as well as for dissemination. The organisation of a chain of international symposia, conferences and advanced courses in bio-dynamics, bio-sensing and related areas, hosted by ICB in its new premises, provided a perfect example of successful blend between networking, dissemination, training and exploitation activities, that could only be possible in the context of accomplishment of an improved RDT infrastructure.

The substantial efforts placed during ROBIOS project in establishing a functional network have been materialised in the setting up of a chain of mobility schemes between ICB and its partners within the network and in the development of new proposals for the first Seventh Framework Programme call for proposals. To this end it is worth mentioning that during the third year of ROBIOS we managed to participate in/catalyse relevant proposals for international cooperation calls. Seven proposals have reached the deadlines of the first calls of proposals while two others are envisaged to address the forthcoming 2008 priorities following the design set within the meeting of the network for the development of selective bio-recognition and bio-affinity platforms. A new set of applications relevant for nano-biomedical priorities has been fostered within dedicated consortia assembled by ICB, gathering several members of the network and biomedical partners.

Successful completion of the proposed objectives will allow ROBIOS to be active after the end of the project. Reinforcement of transfer and exploitation features of ICB research activities is envisioned as one of the avenues for attracting financial support after project completion.
