Final Activity Report Summary - FEMTOIMAGING (Experimental studies of photoinitiated reactions and photodissociation dynamics by nanosecond and femtosecond velocity map imaging)

The interaction of light with matter may lead to the photodissociation of molecules, i.e. the breaking apart of the chemical bond under the influence of light. In addition, bimolecular chemical reactions, i.e. those processes involving the breaking and forming of chemical bonds, are also studied nowadays by means of light to initiate the chemical reaction. Studies of photodissociation and photon initiated chemical reactions provide important insight into atmospheric processes and, additionally, form an integral part of molecular reaction dynamics, a field of physical chemistry aiming to the understanding elementary chemical processes. The state-of-the-art experimental methods to study photo dissociation and photon initiated chemical reaction dynamics include molecular beams, time-of-flight mass.
