Final Activity Report Summary - SDDF (Small Deformations in Deep Foundation for Engineering Practice in Terms of the Finite Element Method)

The project entitled 'Influence of small deformations on deep foundation in engineering practice in the finite element method' had a very positive influence on my reintegration with the scientific community in Poland as well as on my professional career. Firstly, it enabled me to initiate my work to obtain a postdoctoral degree in Poland. Moreover, the financial contribution allowed me to organise my working place in the new environment.

The project also allowed me to use in practice my organisation and management skills, to organise the research and gather around the project a group of people willing to share their knowledge and engage directly in relevant research.

Within the framework of the project we initiated cooperation with numerous scientific centres, such as the Polish Academy of Science, Warsaw University of Technology, Gdansk University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology and Institute of Meteorology and Water Management. We also maintained cooperation with my former institution, Helsinki University of Technology. This project helped me to quickly develop my scientific career and achieve professional promotion. After three years spent in Helsinki I made significant professional progress. I was granted a PhD title and started working at the Technical University of Lodz. Furthermore, I won a competition for the post of university lecturer.

The proposed research topic was very popular among engineers and scientists. Deep foundation within anchored diaphragm walls in the densely built-up area of Warsaw, which recently became a large construction site, was a very popular technique. The construction of high buildings was a real challenge for engineers and a very interesting topic for many researchers. This was due to some poor construction soils, called the Warsaw soft clay, which could be found in the entire city area. The experience gained in Warsaw could also be used for deep foundation on poor construction soils in other parts of Poland, Europe and the whole world.

The problem of safe buildings' construction on diaphragm walls was a very specific and complicated issue. It was required to recreate the complex technological process using calculations. The process contained the construction of diaphragm walls as well as multi-stage excavation interrupted by the construction of anchors. The boundary conditions of the collaboration of the construction with the soil and the presented construction process enforced advanced numerical modelling, which took into account non-elasticity and, as a consequence, non-linearity which was related to the excavation process.

The main objective of my scientific work by the time, including the project research, was to achieve not only qualitative, but also quantitative results of numerical analyses. My main assumption was to include the complete range of two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional phenomena in the numerical model of deep foundation at a particular construction site.

In the course of the project, we worked on the development of Hydro-geo, a professional finite element software package. The package included two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses and was oriented towards geotechnics and hydraulic engineering. The copyright belonged to Warsaw University of Technology (WUT), which made the entire source code available to the Technical University of Lodz (TUL) in order to allow TUL to develop it further. The latter was one of the proposal assumptions.

The project caused other scientific centres to participate in the full development of the software. The centres included WUT, Helsinki University of Technology, as well as the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Warsaw. This cooperation made the exchange of scientific information more effective, and this was proved by the conference we organised in the initial project phase.

To sum up, the project made my professional reintegration simpler and effective.
