Final Activity Report Summary - BRAIN BIOENERGETICS

The main objective of the project was to reinforce the research potential of centre of molecular medicine at university of Tartu in brain bioenergetics in its most emerging fields.

The project involved two components:
- First, transfer of theoretical know-how in fields that have been neglected in centre. During the project we hosted two incoming fellows (both for two years) having experience in field of bioinformatics and mitochondrial genomics.
- Second, our staff made altogether 13 short time visits (from 1.5 to 7 months) to our training partners for transfer of practical know-how. These short-term visits were directed toward gathering the methodological competence and as well for facilitating scientific cooperation with outstanding research groups aboard.

As a measurable outcome of the project we published 15 (from which 14 are joint publications with our training partners) scientific publications in refereed international journals and submitted two patent applications.

We would like to highlight four particularly innovative developments:
1. Discovery of the role of the Miro proteins in mitochondrial transport jointly with research groups from university of Ferrara and Thomas Jefferson University that was published proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
2. Extensive review about GAD65 in autoimmunity written together with Professor Ake Lermark from University of Lund in advances of immunology.
3. Discoveries related with the role of mitochondrial volume (jointly with Professor Vladimir Veksler from INSERM) and mitochondrial biogenesis in neurons summarised in two papers published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
4. European and national patent applications related with the use of transgenic animal model for modelling of pathological anxiety project has thus facilitated considerably our scientific cooperation with outstanding European laboratories as well as improved our research capacity.
