Final Activity Report Summary - ECGTN (European corporate governance training network)

The ECGTN network was a big success, both in terms of research achievements and training of young researchers in the field of European corporate governance. ECGTN helped to reduce the European research and training gap in corporate governance by bringing together leading academics and institutions from economics, finance, management, political economy and law in Europe to train doctoral students in conducting world class research in this important area.

The training experience was greatly enhanced by the inclusion of nodes from Turkey, Switzerland, Canada, and the United States, each contributing special expertise and training opportunities. The training experience was further enhanced by association with the 'European corporate governance institute' (ECGI) an interdisciplinary pan-European research Institute with a wide range of industry contacts, and CEPR, the longest standing 'think net' in economics and finance in Europe. Together, ECGI and CEPR brought an even wider group of scholars and training opportunities to the network.

A number of joint research initiatives - both between senior researchers an ESRs - were initiated through the project, and the teams and ESRs networked at numerous conferences and workshops - organised as part of or outside the network. ECGTN organised four annual conferences and three summer schools. In addition, a number of events organised by the ECGTN teams locally were opened up to the network's senior and junior researchers, enabling them to even further engage with each other on topics of European corporate governance.

The summer schools had very high profile lecturers - both from the United States and Europe - which greatly benefited the fellows hired by the network. The recruitment target of ECGTN was almost fully achieved, overall 351 months out of the 360 months allocated to the teams in the network were hired out. 214 months were used by male, and 137 months were hired out to female researchers. This gives a gender balance of roughly 60/40, which is above the target for the network. The ECGTN ESRs came from 12 different countries, mostly from the European Union but also from three different third countries to the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). Three ESRs came from the recently acceded European Union Member States, and a number from lesser favoured regions within the EU 25. The average duration of ESR contracts in ECGTN comes to 16.7 months, with a number of contracts lasting the full 36 months period available to the fellows.

The network website (please see online) helped the general communication between the ECGTN researchers (through a mailing facility) and also attracted external researchers and policy makers to the network. The website also features a profile for each ESR hired by the network, and gives access to a short interview conducted with the ESRs where they describe their experience with the network.
