Final Activity Report Summary - DISTORM (Distributed knowledge systems and techniques for advanced network management)

The stated objectives of the DISTORM project, as per Annex B1 of the proposal were to:

1. address the competence weakness in the areas of distributed computing and information modelling
2. increase the scale of industrial research in Ericsson in Athlone
3. grow the capability of Ericsson researchers and increase the exposure of the incoming researchers to commercial research and development.

It is our view that all of the above goals were successfully achieved. The Marie-Curie programme exposed Ericsson to a group of international researchers that it otherwise would not have engaged with and Ericsson's experience with the researchers was such that there was no hesitation in offering them extended positions beyond the end of the programme. Four Marie Curie researchers chose to remain on with Ericsson and we continued to have research interaction with the other Marie Curie researchers.

The host research group, i.e. the Ericsson Ireland Research Centre, grew from eight researchers to a current total of eighteen. This highlighted additional evidence of the importance and benefits of the Marie Curie programme to the industry. By the time of the project completion we had three active research teams working in the areas of distributed network management, network management interoperability based on information modelling and network information visualisation. This last group arose as a byproduct of research in information modelling research, seeded by DISTORM.

We also succeeded in building indigenous researcher capability through interaction and interwork between incoming Marie Curie researchers and Ericsson researchers. The presence of an internationally competitive skill set in the unit raised the research capability of the unit through the synergies created with their introduction. This generated additional research value beyond the one originally envisaged. We established a vibrant intellectual property creation environment and submitted a number of inventions over the course of the programme, of which many were filed as patents. Marie Curie researchers played both a direct role in the filing of a number of these patents and also an indirect role through knowledge transfer.

We established a strong publication track record and published a number of papers over the course of DISTORM. These included a number of journal papers and publications at tier one conferences. Incoming researchers also attended a large number of conferences for upskilling and educational purposes. Furthermore, we established an ongoing workshop for distributed autonomous network management systems (DANMS) which was hosted at leading conferences such as Manweek and Globecom. These workshops were very well received by the network management research community and attracted high quality cutting edge research contribution in themed network management research areas. They were actively driven and managed by the incoming researchers. In addition, Marie Curie researchers served on the technical programme committees of a number of major network management conferences such as Internet Network Management (INM) with Sigcomm, distributed systems operation and management (DSOM) with Manweek and management of multimedia and mobile network and services (MMNS), also with Manweek.

Overall, we consider DISTORM to have been a resounding success. It built up our competence and capability and gave us a platform to conduct world class network management research in the key thematic areas of distributed computing and information modelling. This helped to establish the Ericsson Ireland Research Centre as a leading player in this field in Ericsson worldwide. It is important to highlight the fact that the improved and increased profile gained by Ericsson in Athlone in the network management domain would not have been possible without the intervention funds awarded under Marie Curie.
