Final Activity Report Summary - MODELMGB2 (Modelling, characterization and development of MgB2 superconductors for AC power applications)

The objectives of MODELMGB2 have been all fulfilled, and are listed in the following:
Acquisition of knowledge and skills by the host organisation in numerical modelling techniques of HTS materials with the finite-element method (FEM).
Advanced training of host staff in 2D / 3D FEM modelling and simulation of MgB2 conductors, including development of new Jc(B) and n(B) models.
Studying the AC losses in multifilamentary MgB2 wires and tapes and the ways for loss optimisation in different applications by means of intensive FEM simulations.
Evaluating the operating conditions and magnetic field effects in MgB2 superconducting devices, such as cables, transformers, and fault-current limiters.
Upgrading the experimental system of the host for AC loss measurements with transport current up to 800 A with / without external magnetic field in the range 4.2 - 30 K.
Performing system calibration, I-V data acquisition for DC characterisation, and AC loss measurements of the manufactured conductors with the electrical measurement technique.
Design and development of novel low-loss MgB2 conductors for AC power applications.

Thanks to these achievements, modelling and experimental tools to analyse and optimise the architecture of MgB2-based superconducting wires produced in industrial quantities have been now developed. Particular regard to AC-loss optimisation has given the required feedback to the wire production team within the Company. A multifilamentary conductor with special Titanium-based sheath has been therefore developed. This conductor is expected to represent soon the basis for AC applications of superconducting wires in applications.
