Final Activity Report Summary - ASAP (Advanced Seismic Acquisition and Processing)

The aim of the project was to acquire knowledge in order to develop advanced seismic data acquisition and processing technologies. The project created an interface between the developed and less favoured regions of the EU and provided transfer of technological and theoretical knowledge, which is of great benefit to all disciplines where it is required to investigate the Earth's sub-surface structure, for example for monitoring Carbon Capture and Sequestration. To fulfil the research objectives the research group developed vibroseis seismic techniques to increase data quality (fidelity, resolution, etc.) and/or to increase productivity.

During the research, we have learnt new information on the seismic signals emitted by the vibrator, especially on the harmonic distortion. We have studied time-frequency representations of signals and developed filtering tools in that domain. We have implemented Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithms for optimal distortion induced noise removal.

A major result of the research is the source signal estimation and harmonic noise removal method where distortion is taken into account and can handle the aggressive slip-sweep situation. We have worked on another aspect of a productive seismic reflection measurement via appropriate signal-to-noise ratio prediction while local ambient noise conditions are taken into account. We have developed a method for near-surface velocity-depth profile determination, which has the potential for a patent with further work and can be used in several applications for better processing of seismic reflection data: velocity model building, static correction, intra-array perturbation correction and noise removal. All the methods we studied and developed have been tested on synthetic and field data to prove their applicability.

Our publicly available results were communicated at several conferences and workshops. Our methods are published in conference proceedings, abstract books (IEEE, EAGE, EGU, MGSZ) and also in scientific journals (Geophysical Prospecting, Geophysical Transactions). The training and transfer of knowledge objectives were achieved in several ways. There were 10 newly recruited researchers involved during the 3 years. The project participants got high-level training in seismic acquisition, signal analysis and processing. Now they have got experience in the PROMAX processing system.

As a complementary skill they were trained in Seismic Unix, the prototyping tool for seismic applications. During the day-by-day communications the recruits were able to discuss the scientific articles they studied and their technical knowledge were enhanced by the help given during their work. There were several workshops organised by ELGI, where top level invited speakers were also giving talks. Conference participations were important source of knowledge, too. There were several field excursions organised by the Host. We visited active seismic field crews, where common and new technologies were used. Also other geophysical methods were presented while hydraulic fracturing was carried out, and geophysical device comparison test was organised. Host staff training at Partner institutions involved 8 researchers from ELGI.

We used both partner institutions' facilities for testing the developed methods. Schlumberger Cambridge Research (SCR) and WesternGeco (WG) provided technological skills and trainings in areas such as current best practice techniques, field methodologies, industry hardware and software. The Partners provided trainings for application of the signal analysis methods on archive data. The trained scientists have learnt the experiences of the possible end users of their products. To maintain compatibility with the partners, the MATLAB system was the main development tool. The partner institute SCR transferred their algorithms for project purposes and they provided trainings for the staff of the Host on MATLAB programs.
