High performance computing knowledge for nano-electronic design automation

Final Activity Report Summary - 4NEDA (High Performance Computing Knowledge for nano-Electronic Design Automation)

Task0 - Project management and ToK coordination (PMU) - done during the entire project duration.

Task1 - First recruitment action - done in Nov 2007 by the appointment for two years of two experienced researchers one from Poland and other form Malaysia.

Task2 - Design, installation, configuration and administration of the HPC server - a PC cluster (with 128 CPU-cores (86000 Euro investment in durable equipment) was done in the planned time. The Cluster is fully operational since end of September 2009, the documentation was finished in October 2009.

Task3 - Design and configuration of a functional local Grid - done in December 2009.

Task4 - Configuration and benchmarking of international Grid - the middle-ware was prepared on the Cluster - done in February 2010.

Task5 - Second recruitment action (The appointment for two years of a very experienced researchers originated from Germany) done in April 2008.

Task6 - Development of a new procedures for writing parallel scientific software. - It was started in Oct 2008 being completed in July. 2010, when it was parallelised certain parts of Chamy, which is the demonstrator code developed at CIEAC in conjunction with the Chameleon-RF project. A GPGPU accelerated GMRES solver using CUDA has been also completed. The Cluster went into fully local administration in April 2010.

Task7 - Research, training and consulting in CSE, SCEE and nEDA has been done before the Cluster went into local administration. Several courses on HPC were conducted by all hired fellows for the benefit of local staff. They include topics on Introduction to High Performance Computing, Software development cycle, ATLAS network configuration/architecture, Distributed programming models and Matlab interfaces. Several ESRs were supervised by ToK fellows and underwent on the job training while working on assigned mini projects. Local research staff carried out advanced research activities with notable achievements.

Task8 - Dissemination and exploitation of results was done by Tok fellows together with local researchers, activity described in the "dissemination of results" section.

The project was under control in its entire duration. All planned activities are done and the project objectives were reached. Research Activities:
The programmed research activities are completed, according to the original plan.
As a result of the research activity, an innovative technology for modelling and design of passive components in HF integrated circuit was developed and transferred to our industrial partners.
The international scientific community recognition of the fellowship research contribution. The project coordinator was invited to make a presentation to the Scientific Computing in Electrical Engineering Conference (SCEE), Espoo, Finland?

Transfer of knowledge activities:
The experienced researchers hired within TOK-4NED as well as the local researchers expressed many times their satisfaction to have the opportunity to work in an international team, at the highest level of research.

Management :
The "internal" communication and decision making between the co-ordinator and the experienced researchers was very effective, including an important feedback processes.
The recruitment strategy of the fellowship was based on the principles of equal opportunities and open competition at international level.

The practical actions carried out to implement the knowledge transfer within TOK-4NED project are:
Common research and development activity in teams working for European projects;
Courses to the staff with various topics from the selected area;
Lectures and training-on-the job for ESRs trained in PUB - Master and Doctoral programs;
Demonstration and interdisciplinary training about new software environments;
Consulting, tutoring and training related to complementary skills;
Dissemination and exploitation of the research results and own career development activity.
