Innovative anti-inflammatory medication

New pharmaceutical products with anti-inflammatory activity are extremely important in the medical community, given the extensive list of auto-immune diseases that can affect humans.
Innovative anti-inflammatory medication
An Italian company has developed a novel medication based on extracts from the Symphytum officinale plants. The derived compounds are characterised by anti-allergic, antiviral and vaso-protector properties.

This is an injectable solution already tested in a clinical setting with promising results against autoimmune diseases, chronic infections and viral hepatitis. The main mode of action of the active ingredients is immunomodulatory, essentially restoring a normalised immune response.

The company has been granted a patent for the use of the drug and the methods for its extraction from the Symphytum officinale plant. The extraction techniques and the associated manufacturing processes are considered highly reproducible and render this technology highly attractive to pharmaceutical companies active in this area. Furthermore, parts of the patented process cover the elimination of the pyrolizidine alkaloid compounds, commonly found in the Symphytum officinale plant. The removal step of pyrolizidine alkaloids during the extraction and manufacturing process results in a toxicity-free injectable solution.

The company is seeking to outlicense rights to the patents and gain financial support for further research in this area. Further collaboration is also needed in the area of clinical trial organisation and setup.
