A bird's eye view from Moussala peak

A strategically located weather observatory has had its systems and networking capabilities enhanced to make it a first-class European institute.
A bird's eye view from Moussala peak
The Basic Environmental Observatory of Moussala (BEO Moussala) lies on Moussala peak, Rila Mountain, Bulgaria. The EU-funded project 'BEO Centre of excellence research capacity improvement for sustainable environment and advanced integration into ERA' (Beobal) has transformed the observatory into a global institute to integrate it into the European Research Area (ERA). The project also helped the observatory develop ties with the World Meteorological Organization by making it a regional station of the latter's Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) programme.

Beobal empowered the observatory to address current key issues in the field such as climate change, sustainable development and space weather using advanced measuring devices and systems. This includes improved aerosol measurement, monitoring of ecosystems and enhanced use of information technology, as well as early detection and control of natural hazards. Other elements include the monitoring of gas emissions and atmosphere pollutants such as carbon levels and ozone depletion, in addition to environmental radioactivity.

On another level, the project achieved important networking activities for the observatory and encouraged youth to appreciate science through its facilities. Networking was achieved through partnerships with major Balkan institutions and beyond, as well as a number of study visits from institutes in surrounding countries.

In summary, BEO Moussala has become a centre of excellence in its field and is now a key observatory in Europe. Its exchanges with other European institutes have positioned it strongly in the ERA, bringing a direct positive impact to citizens and improving sustainability.
