Scientific research takes the stage

An EU-funded project developed a travelling exhibition and theatre kit to teach the general public about life sciences and biomolecular research.
Scientific research takes the stage
Research and innovation, especially in the field of biosciences, are to be the basis of the new knowledge-based society. As a result they will have a direct impact on all our lives. If Europe’s citizens are to support these goals it is essential that the results of life science research are communicated to all members of society, including those with little scientific understanding. Therefore, an initiative was established to raise public awareness of scientific innovation and breakthroughs resulting in a range of applications.

The 'DNA travelling exhibition and science theatre' (DNA-TEST) project comprised a display of life science topics and a short live theatre performances for members of the public unfamiliar with scientific research. The resources developed by the consortium did not assume prior scientific knowledge so as not to exclude the majority of senior citizens and younger adults with limited experience or interest in the subject.

An exhibition kit that enabled European bioscience communicators to buy the materials at minimum cost and to develop the exhibition themselves was made available via the project coordinator's website ( conducted a tour of Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands, and the information acquired at the different locations was used to update and complete the exhibition and science theatre kit.

The success of the project enabled the general public to gain a greater understanding of the contribution that life sciences research makes to Europe’s economy.
