Medical policies in the making

A valuable database of medical trials and results is helping policymakers around the world reach more informed decisions to improve citizens' health.
Medical policies in the making
Do policymakers have adequate knowledge to make the right decisions regarding our health systems? Are they knowledgeable enough to tackle specific issues such as child health and maternal health? The EU-funded project 'The Support collaboration: Supporting policy relevant reviews and trials' (Support) created an outstanding database to support informed policymaking at all levels.

To help policymakers and medical authorities across Europe reach more intelligent decisions, the project team collected almost 200 summaries of relevant health issues and published them online. The summaries provided information on results of key medical reviews as well as the applicability of the results and economic considerations that make policymakers' decisions easier.

The project team also published 19 articles representing support tools for policymakers describing the processes that ensure relevant research is identified, appraised and used correctly in policymaking. These are being translated into Chinese, French, Portuguese and Spanish to be useful not only in Europe but in Asia, French-speaking Africa and Latin America as well. These are regions where correct health policy decisions are crucial to improving well-being and saving lives.

The Support initiative also looked at empowering low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) in undertaking more medical research and high-quality trials. It created an online trial management tool or software to develop the right protocol for research, supporting it with audiovisual material and examples. The project also provided software tools to assist in funding researchers in the field as well as workshops for stakeholders (policymakers, funders, trial researchers). These actions are set to go a long way in reducing poverty, promoting sustainability, enhancing good governance and supporting economies worldwide, in line with EU development policies and values.
