Ultrasound technologies for textile production

EU-funded researchers illuminated the processes occurring within the ‘black box’ of ultrasound (US) technology applied to textile manufacturing. Project outcomes have important implications for competitiveness and sustainability within the textiles manufacturing sector.
Ultrasound technologies for textile production
Application of US technology to textile manufacturing processes is not a new concept. However, until now, optimising US technology for textile and non-woven applications has relied on the so-called black box approach, referring to the idea that one studies the input to and output from ‘the box’ without seeing inside, and without examining the individual components and their effects on process control and final product. The result has been inefficient processes that prevented industrial-scale application of US technology.

European researchers in the ‘Acceleration of textile processes by ultrasound technology’ (Ultratec) project developed a fundamental understanding of US technology applied to textile processes. They evaluated a number of uses including textile cleaning, enzyme-catalysed processes, coating processes and use of lamination with adhesives. Some of these have application in manufacturing hygienic products, products with better mechanical properties and textiles with ultraviolet protection.

Industrial application of the results could significantly impact competitiveness and sustainability of the European textile industry by decreasing process times, decreasing energy and chemicals usage and enhancing process optimisation leading to major decreases in manufacturing costs.
