Medical membrane nanotechnology from lab to market

EU-funded researchers established a Network of Excellence (NoE) for membrane nanotechnology relevant to the medical sector that should enhance cooperation between research and small business.
Medical membrane nanotechnology from lab to market
Membrane science and technology is an active area of research focused on the use of artificial membranes for separation processes in the medical, chemical, environmental and energy industries.

With regard to medical applications, membranes are critical to drug delivery systems, artificial organs (e.g. artificial kidneys to filter blood), tissue engineering and biosensors.

EU researchers sought to strengthen European research activities regarding the use of membranes in medical applications via the ‘Expanding membrane macroscale applications by exploring nanoscale material properties’ (Nanomempro) project.

In particular, a European NoE was created to coordinate research activities, to extend the scope of worldwide collaboration, and to develop important links between research centres and industry with a special emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Nanomempro established the European Membrane House (EMH), the legal entity responsible for Nanomempro’s activities, as well as a European membrane technology software platform.

Exploitation of Nanomempro project outcomes should ensure focused and rapid transition of new medical membrane technology from laboratory bench to market with important effects on the competitiveness of European SMEs in the sector.
