Overcoming drought

Overcoming the barriers to adopting new technologies for more efficient water use in troubled Mediterranean regions is a noble objective, one that the EU has wholeheartedly adopted.
Overcoming drought
The Mediterranean region is a relatively dry one that could benefit from expertise in more efficient water use for its crops. The EU-funded project Wuemed aimed to increase efficiency of water use in drought-stricken areas. It brought together experts, scientists and policymakers under one workshop to look at novel ways to address the issue.

The workshop investigated the latest knowledge and technology on the subject documented in recent EU initiatives under Euro-Mediterranean partnerships such as Incomed and Interdrought-II. It gathered 140 participants from 30 nations, including many from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). In parallel, the project conducted courses on drought-related topics for students, gathering 80 participants from 27 countries.

In addition, Wuemed enabled smarter communication and information exchange on improving drought tolerance and managing water resources through a report on the workshop's results and through its website. The project's website represented a complete resource on water issues featuring workshop presentations and outcomes, as well as with links to other key websites.

Positive outcomes of the project include promoting technical improvements to dry areas and evaluating results on Mediterranean agriculture. The website, reports and workshop results are set to help water availability, ultimately supporting more socioeconomic stability and enhancing well-being in drought-stricken regions.
