Comprehensive nanoelectronics design tools

A large EU-funded consortium is developing theoretical descriptions and models of transport phenomena in novel nanomaterials and systems. The tools should boost the EU's global position in nanoelectronics' development.

Nanotechnology development is increasing exponentially, yet the modelling tools needed to support knowledge-based design are currently lagging behind. Scientists initiated the EU-funded project 'Nanoelectronics: Concepts, theory and modelling' (NANOCTM) to provide a turbo boost to nanoelectronics design.

Ten labs with internationally recognised expertise in the theory of condensed matter physics are employing a highly integrated approach to nanotransport phenomena related to electrical and magnetic properties, light, temperature and chemical reactivity. Investigators are studying quantum mechanical phenomena in nano-structured materials and systems including nanowires, quantum dot systems, graphene and spintronics.

NANOCTM researchers have developed mathematical formulations that led to numerous theoretical predictions, some of which have already been confirmed with their own experiments. Highly significant results were obtained from studies of electromagnetic field enhancements in a variety of molecular systems that could have applications in molecular optoelectronics and photonics.

The wealth of theoretical and modelling tools for nanoelectronics being developed within the context of NANOCTM is expected to speed the realisation of novel functional nano-scale architectures and their integration into future nanoelectronic devices. Nanoscience will be the foundation of global technological and scientific leadership with associated economic benefits and NANOCTM scientists are ensuring a sturdy foundation on which to build.
