Building research ties between Chile and the EU

Chile and the EU share many areas of research, such as renewable energy, astronomy, polar studies and water management. A recent cooperation agreement has strengthened science and technology (S&T) research ties between the two areas.
Building research ties between Chile and the EU
Since 2002, several research cooperation agreements have been in place between Chile and the EU. These agreements support international collaboration and exchange programmes between the regions. Building on these existing networks, the EU has funded another cooperation agreement as part of the 'Strengthen Chilean European science and technology partnerships' (CHIEP-II) project. CHIEP-II set out to enhance bilateral S&T partnerships and to coordinate research policy.

The agreement has resulted in improved dissemination of opportunities for researcher exchange programmes, as well as several scientific missions and workshops. Policy talks also took place to improve existing collaborations and to develop new ones.

In addition, liaison offices have been established in both Chile and the EU. CHIEP-II also funded staff training to provide support and advice for Chilean researchers in the EU and vice versa.

Research is naturally global, and the development of such agreements provides mutual benefit to both parties. As such, CHIEP-II has contributed to advancing both Chilean and European research on the world stage.
