New model libraries for electric aircraft

New simulation solutions for aircraft electrical systems developed by an EU-funded project should help the European aviation industry meet the new challenges of more-electric aircraft.

Modelling and simulation software plays an important role in the design of aircraft networks. Novel libraries describing the behaviour of electrical systems developed by the AAASP (Advanced avionic applications simulation platform) project represent powerful tools for making the transition towards electric aircraft. They can also help the industry avoid costly and time-consuming experimentation during initial design phases. Researchers have developed a library of models on network and equipment levels that can save numerous iterations of model development and testing by aircraft manufacturers. In particular, the team developed models for wing ice protection systems, motor controllers and dual winding motors, motor drivers and power interfaces, as well as solid-state power controllers and remotely controlled circuit breakers. A comprehensive suite of customisable tools for automating post-processing actions and data analysis allows for a comparison of the performance of electrical systems against aircraft standards and/or user specifications. Use of the modelling and simulation platform will assist manufacturers and suppliers of aircraft equipment in reviewing specifications and preliminary designs early in the design process. In addition, the platform will reduce design errors, mismatches on a system level, and the cost of rework and repair in manufacturing. Ultimately, the newly developed tools will reduce the time to market for new products, thereby boosting the competitive edge of the European aviation industry.
