A Council Decision of 9 September 1991 (91/505/EEC) adopts a specific research and technological development programme in the field of biomedicine and health from 9 September 1991 to 31 December 1994. Scientific and technical objectives include: Development of coordinated research on prevention, care and health systems (the harmonization of methodologies and protocols in epidemiological, biological, clinical and technological research); major health problems and diseases of great socio-economic impact (research into AIDS, cancer, cardiovascular disease, mental illness and neurological disease, the ageing process and age-related health problems and handicaps); human genome analysis (aimed at the completion and integration of the genetic and physical maps, study of the genetic basis for biological functions, and the setting-up of a coordinating mechanism to sequence those portions of the genome of major biological interest); research on biomedical ethics (related to problems arising from research carried out in the above areas, and to the possible applications of research results). Funds estimated as necessary for the execution of the programme amount to ECU 131.67 million, plus a sum of ECU 1.33 million for the dissemination and exploitation of results.
