Testing the potential of systems biology
Researchers are beginning to realise the potential of systems biology approaches to address questions of medical relevance. However, existing funding schemes and the investment of pharmaceutical industries in the field need to be reconsidered. Similarly, the challenges, hurdles and opportunities for systems biology in medical applications have to be addressed at a European level so that integrated policies can be established. The EU-funded ‘Systems biology for medical applications’ (Sysbiomed) project aimed to assess the potential applications of systems biology in medicine. The initiative organised workshops that offered opportunities for young scientists to enter this field and interact with experts in the medical field and industry with the aim to develop potential systems biology applications in medicine. Particular attention was given to the transfer of knowledge to commercial enterprises by providing access to cutting-edge science. Clinicians also had the opportunity to evaluate future perspectives of systems biology in translational research. Moreover, the Sysbiomed initiative collaborated with other actions and projects in order to establish collaborations and avoid redundant efforts wasting valuable resources. Overall, the project managed to bring together recognised group leaders and young researchers, to identify and prioritise suitable application areas for systems biology within the medical sciences. The project’s activities are expected to lay the groundwork for future research initiatives and establish systems biology as an integral part of academic and commercial research in the field of medical sciences.
