Nanotechnology is a relatively new science that could form an important pillar of the European technology front. European citizens, however, are suspicious of this controversial technology and its possible effects, calling for better communication to investigate the discipline properly. The EU-funded project Nanologue took up the challenge. The project aimed to highlight nanotech benefits and impacts, as well as clarify ethical, social and legal issues surrounding nanotech applications, fostering dialogue among society and other stakeholders. Nanologue documented the latest information on certain nanotech applications that were in the pipeline, particularly in the areas of medicine, materials, energy and life sciences. It examined the ethical, social and legal aspects involved and established a neutral platform for dialogue. This initiative comprised interviews with representatives from civil society and with researchers in order to substantiate claims, opinions and relevant issues. It also involved the articulation of three scenarios on the future of nanotechnology, resulting in a publication titled 'We need to talk: the future of nanotechnology'. Lastly, the project team created a 'Nanometer' to evaluate the implications of nanotechnology on society, measuring acceptance and progress on the issue. All these steps will help improve the acceptance of nanotech applications and highlight economic opportunities that could boost the European economy greatly.
