Efficient water usage by factories is essential for sustainable development. It is becoming an important concern in numerous countries and is even more critical in places where water scarcity is particularly pronounced. Egypt is pushing to modernise its factories and adopt more sustainable practices. As such, it is in need of theoretical and practical training regarding advanced water treatment. The ‘Effective use of water in coal and steel industry’ (Steelwater) project was initiated as a collaboration between an Egyptian and a Swedish research institute to investigate the possibility of implementing certain Swedish solutions at Egyptian plants. Techniques included those for recovery of acids, recovery of alkaline cleaning baths and treatment of oil emulsions. Activities of the Steelwater project should increase capacity for technology transfer among researchers, government and industry in Egypt. By demonstrating full-scale solutions to minimise water usage and maximise the efficiency of wastewater treatment, Steelwater outcomes are expected to make an important impact on Egypt’s transition to sustainable production processes.
