The European Commission, DG XIII, has recently published "Language Engineering - Progress and prospects" which provides a review of activities in the Language Engineering sector of the Telematics Applications programme from 1994 to 1996. The report outlines the objectives of the sector, and shows how language engineering applications have developed in the Information Society and how they will affect citizens and businesses. It looks at the achievements of the programme and at the prospects for the next stage of research in language engineering. A total of 38 projects have been supported by the Language Engineering sector during this period, in the following fields: - Telebusiness; - Information services; - Education and training; - Public interest; - International commerce; - Language resources. The report contains summaries of the work of each of these, as well as listing publications in the language engineering field. A revised version, which should include a further 20 projects, will be published in mid-1998.
