In December 1994, the European Commission published the first call for proposals under its specific RTD programme in the field of agriculture and fisheries (FAIR) (OJ No C 357 of 15.12.1994). Of the 932 proposals received under Areas 1 and 3 of the FAIR work programme, 44 have been accepted for funding by DG XII of the European Commission (Science, research and development). These are distributed as follows (number of projects accepted indicated in brackets): - Area 1: Integrated production and processing chains: . Area 1.1: The biomass and bio-energy chain (7); . Area 1.2: The "green" chemical and polymer chain (7); . Area 1.3: The forestry-wood chain (12); - Area 3: Generic science and advanced technologies for nutritious foods: . Area 3.1: Consumer nutrition and well-being (10); . Area 3.2: New and optimized food materials and nutritious food products (8). In addition, one project accepted under Area 6 of the FAIR work programme (Objectives addressed by concertation), in the sub-section "Ethical, legal and social aspects" (ELSA), will also be financed by DG XII. The total Community funding allocated to these projects amounts to over ECU 43.7 million.
