The European Commission is to provide ECU 5 million for urban renewal programmes in the Möllevången, Sofieland, Augustenborg, Almhög and Nydala districts of Malmö, Sweden. The money comes from the URBAN Community Initiative, part of the European Community's Structural Funds, and will be matched by funding from the local authorities and private sector. The urban regeneration programme will contribute to the creation of 200-300 new jobs, and provide training for a further 500 people. The programme will also strengthen the social and economic infrastructures in these districts, and improve the quality of public spaces. Projects to be funded will include the creation of an integrated business and community centre, the establishment of a media centre for young people to gain experience of audio-visual media, and actions to encourage self-management of housing schemes.
