A book presenting summaries of projects in the area of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) has recently been published by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. GIS can be considered as a tool with which to acquire and present geographical and other data. The book documents GIS projects which are funded by the European Commission, DG III, within the ESPRIT programme, and research projects of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC). A section is also devoted to INCO (Cooperation with third countries and international organizations) projects that are concerned with GIS. The material in the book has been collected within a series of concertation activities carried out jointly by the ESPRIT programme and the JRC. These concertation activities started with a workshop on GIS in June 1995, which aimed to present progress in projects and to identify synergies, leading to the definition of long-term objectives for a European strategy in the field. The purpose of the publication is to give details of ongoing activities in the field of GIS and to present a picture of the latest technologies. This aims to stimulate further thinking and to create new innovation in GIS technologies and markets. The projects are indexed in the book by project acronym, project title, keywords and project numbers. The project summaries are presented in three sections, by programme: ESPRIT, JRC and INCO. These summaries detail the objectives, approach and methods, results and contact details for each project.
