A communication outlining specific policy orientations for an energy policy which takes environmental considerations into account has recently been adopted by the European Commission. A range of actions are proposed in the communication for a more environmentally sustainable energy future, which will focus on three priority areas. These relate to the promotion of energy efficiency and energy saving, increasing the share of renewable energy sources, and reducing the environmental impact of conventional energy sources. The communication underlines the need for action in this context at all levels and stresses the responsibility of the individual Member States, as most energy policy measures are taken by the Council and the Member States. For its part, the Commission has undertaken to facilitate and support close cooperation between the Member States and other relevant parties. This cooperation would aim to promote specific energy policy priorities, ensure closer coordination with other EU policy measures in the field of energy, and develop the international dimension of energy policy. In launching the communication, the European Commissioner for energy, Mr Christos Papoutsis, stated the need for a more environmentally-friendly approach to the way energy is produced and used. He also underlined his commitment to a greener energy policy, promoting renewable sources and energy saving as a priority, but stressed the need for a stronger political commitment from the Member States and the Council of Ministers.
