The European Commission's Research DG has issued a call for tenders for a study to map excellence in European research and technological development in the areas of life sciences and nanotechnologies. Mapping excellence in research and technological development at a European level aims to provide useful intelligence allowing greater advantage to be taken of the potential excellent competencies available across Europe. The Commission envisages concluding two contracts to map excellence in research and technological development in Europe in the following areas: - lot 1: life sciences (four fields) - lot 2: nanotechnologies (four fields) The purpose of these studies will be to identify an adequate number of entities in each of the selected fields, with a view to providing an important input to: - visibility raising of excellent competencies across borders; - providing evidence on evolving patterns of excellence; - providing evidence and good practice for disseminating excellence, in the context of the European Research Area initiative. The approach adopted is a modulated indicator-based approach combining bibliometric and patents studies and peer review. The objective of these contracts is to conduct bibliometric and patents studies and analysis of indicators. The geographical basis to which the tasks should refer includes all EU Member States and the associated States: Bulgaria, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland. In addition, a comparison will be made of European excellence at worldwide level. The estimated value of each lot is between 80,000 and 120,000 euro. For further information, please contact: European Commission Directorate-General Research Directorate B, Unit 2 Attn: Ms Christiane Bernard rue de la Loi/Wetstraat 200 B-1049 Brussels Fax +32-2-296 3261 E-mail: christiane.Bernard@cec.eu.int
