The European Commission has published a call for proposals under the Euratom Framework Programme for Nuclear Research and Training Activities. The call falls under the Nuclear Fission, Safety and Radiation Protection section of the Euratom Framework Programme for Nuclear Research and Training Activities. The overall objective of the Nuclear Fission, Safety and Radiation Protection section is to establish a sound scientific and technical basis in order to accelerate practical developments for the safer management of long-lived radioactive waste, to enhance in particular the safety while contributing to the resource efficiency and cost effectiveness of nuclear energy, and to ensure a robust and socially acceptable system of protection of man and the environment against the effects of ionising radiation. Topics covered under this call include: - technical feasibility and long-term performance of repository components - full-scale demonstration of plugs and seals; - support to the technical secretariat of the Implementing Geological Disposal Technology Platform; - simulation Platform for Nuclear Reactor Safety; - impact of the nuclear accident in Japan on severe accident management; - consequences of combination of extreme external events on the safety of nuclear power plants; - research and development activities in support of the implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda of the Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform (SNE-TP); - non-research activities in support of the implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda of SNE-TP; - contribution to low-dose risk research in Europe; - update of emergency management and rehabilitation strategies and expertise in Europe; - transnational access to large infrastructures; - Euratom Fission Training Schemes (EFTS) in 'Nuclear Fission, Safety and Radiation Protection'; - actions supporting programme implementation and other activities; - widening involvement in the 'Fission, Safety and Radiation Protection' Programme. Depending on the strategic nature of the research, the expected impact may be defined at the level of the activity, area or specific topic. Usually a maximum of one project will be considered for funding per topic. Where more than one project per topic may be considered for funding, the funding scheme(s) for that topic is/are indicated in the plural.
