Knowledge mapping on IT competencies in Mediterranean countries and dialogue fostering

The Barcelona declaration of 1995 has launched a new era of collaboration between Mediterranean and European countries. The declaration was a necessary arrangement to strengthen ties and bonds between a group of countries that share a long rich history and a common future outlook. MAP-IT! is in line with the Declaration objectives aiming at strengthening the grounds of such co-operation building process through reciprocal knowledge and on-going dialogue.

The objectives of MAP-IT! are double fold:

1. To map the competencies in the Mediterranean IST arena, as corresponding to the strategic objectives of the IST programme in pivotal areas where Mediterranean countries have already developed research excellence hubs. This project will identify the "excellence" in IST research domains as they are structured in the current Strategic Objectives of the IST programme, and be updated according to the new settings within FP7.

Main achievement will be the mapping of relevant players in the target countries that will be scanned, analysed and classified according to technological and geographical criteria. A consultable geographical database will be created to facilitate access to knowledge on competencies. (Profiling of at least 50 players per country, excelling in the field of R&D in IST).

2. To raise awareness within the Mediterranean IT community about co-operation within the IST programme: Co-operation can be effective only if clear information is established and spread towards the Mediterranean IT community on possibilities offered by the IST programme. Specific awareness raising actions are foreseen to this end, on the basis of the Mediterranean IT excellence hubs that the mapping activity will have identified. A special attention will be paid, throughout the project, to combine "operational information" towards the research community with consensus building and consolidation of objectives within the Mediterranean institutional framework.
