Objectif Microscopic Chemical Imaging (MCI), microscopic imaging with chemical specificity, has clear importance in, for example, screening biopsy samples studies of cellular structure and interface chemistry. MCI in the 3-20?m region of the mid-infrared (MIR), whe re most molecules show characteristic absorption spectra, is a rapidly developing field due to improving MIR imaging detectors. Laser illumination has recently been shown to offer important advantages over thermal sources generally used in the field. Howev er, even state-of-the-art MIR lasers have limited tuning ranges requiring the use of many devices to cover the MIR region. The proposed programme will exploit recent advances in fibre lasers and non-linear optics to develop broadly-tuning MIR sources for u se in MCI. Tuneable MIR radiation will be generated from high-power near-infrared fibre lasers by the use of optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and difference frequency generation (DFG). The use of such sources in MCI will be evaluated and novel techniq ues unavailable with conventional sources, such as frequency-agile, video-rate real-time MCI will be investigated. While advancing this active research area, the proposed programme will also provide valuable training for the applicant. Working within the h ost¿s existing collaborations, both national and international, will enable the acquisition of new skills in the fields of high-power fibre lasers and MIR non-linear optics. MIR imaging techniques specific to the proposal will also be learned. Furthermore, involvement in administering various research programmes, will provide experience in project and financial management, acquiring funding, participating in international collaborations and supervising junior researchers. The combination of inter-disciplina ry technical objectives with international impact potential, and training in a range of research management skills will give the applicant the experience to embark on an individual research career.
