Objectif
The proposed new research infrastructure would generate facilities and resources for carrying out gene expression studies and analyses during early human development and would provide these as essential services to the research community. It would provide both a centre of competence (based on the assembly of gene expression techniques and technical and biological know-how) and information that would be accessible via a web-based database. The feasibility of a distributed network of GRID-linked sites for analysis and interpretation of results would be assessed. The design study would evaluate the needs for and feasibility of: (i) a European-scale research centre for gene expression studies during early human development; (ii) technologies to facilitate analysis and interpretation of gene expression results locally and at a distance (via the GRID); (iii) technologies to facilitate data comparisons eg between developmental stages or between species (human and mouse); (iv) development of a curated database for making results available to the international research community; (v) training, particularly aimed at young researchers and researchers from less-advantaged parts of Europe, in experimental, bioinformatics and ethical aspects of gene expression studies. The proposed research infrastructure would enable the EU to generate world leading research in this field which will be of increasing importance as more genes are identified that underlie mendelian disorders or contribute to many common human diseases.
