Obiettivo Powder Metallurgy (PM) is a fast growing key enabling technology with applications in many sectors eg automotive aerospace & construction . For historic reasons, PM is widely spread throughout the EU with production in at least 12 EU states and contain s a significant proportion of SMEs. This makes it very difficult on a national basis to achieve a critical mass of participants at high-level training. Therefore although European expertise in PM is currently of world standard, our advantage is being erod ed, mainly by Japan and the US who benefit from a good supply of high quality graduates and post-graduates into their industry sectors. It is against this background that the proposal for a coherent series of PMTrainingCourses is submitted. The European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA) is a pan-European industry organisation with members representing over 80% of the PM industry, that has successfully organised EU funded projects in the past. Based on direct industry feedback as evidenced by the ?Visio n 2020 - The European PM industry Roadmap? - the training of researchers at an early stage in their careers is seen as essential to the long-term competitive success of the European PM industry. The PMTrainingCourses programme will provide a coordinated and evolving platform, enabling up to 400 participants from across Europe, to benefit from a unique opportunity to receive teaching provided by some of the leading industrial and academic researchers in the PM world. The intensive & inclusive nature of the courses will foster links between students and tutors from a range of backgrounds and nationalities; and therefore will also significantly contribute to mobility of researchers and the integration of research capability on a European scale. In conclu sion the programme will help to significantly strengthen the quantity and quality of PM researchers across the EU and ultimately improve the competitiveness & sustainability of this dynamic industry sector.
