Objectif The main objective of this project is to develop a uniquely integrated DNA and protein detection system for medical diagnostics. Due to its ease of use and cost-effective nature, the system allows for fast as well as reliable DNA and protein testing. Aiming for point of care and doctor's office applications, e.g. early cancer recognition, this new testing system will improve public health. Moreover the project will enable a broad range of future applications in genomic risk analysis, individualized therapy and antibody detection for identification of diseases, resistances and allergies. Today bio-molecular detection is a promising technology for medical diagnosis with a high socio-economic impact. However, due to its complexity and costs, today's systems are restricted for use at specialized laboratories, making testing expensive and time-consuming. This projects aims to overcome these problems by providing a detection system based on direct electrical read-out, which can improve robustness and substantially decrease costs. This multi-analyte detection system includes novel integrated sensor disposables consisting of sensor arrays, on-chip CMOS read-out circuit, the biochemical sensor interfaces as well as suitable assays. By detection of mass changes at their surface, sensors work label-free according to key-lock principles.Recent progress in DNA and protein cancer marker testing will form the basis for the development of assays for the new system. An easy-to-use read-out setup will be developed, meeting requirements of robustness and usability. A clinical validation of the system in early diagnosis of breast cancer will demonstrate the enormous impact of this key technology for public health. The project will facilitate the entry of sensor array systems into the enormous in-vitro test market. It lays the foundation for strong scientific and economic collaboration between European companies and institutes, which will last long beyond the conclusion of the project.
