Strategy to build up and maintain an integrated sustainable European fungal genomic database required for innovative genomics research on filamentous fungi important for biotechnology and human health

Cel

Wide spread genomic research leads to enormous amounts of data which will be stored in many small databases all over Europe. For integrated European genomic research it is important that such data become easily accessible for all researchers. Therefore, a strategy is developed to build up and maintain an integrated, sustainable European genomic-data base required for innovative genomics research of filamentous fungal model organisms of interest. This database will become a crystallisation point for related systems and then could be integrated and conserved in a central European genomic database.Filamentous fungi are of immense importance both in biotechnology and in human health. The human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus is causing thousands of deaths annually in Europe. Other fungi are important cell factories for the production of many types of compounds including antibiotics, cholesterol-lowering agents, immuno-suppressors, and enzymes. To identify novel drug targets and diagnostics, and to develop new biotechnological processes, it is important to understand the filamentous fungal cell. The recent release of complete genomic sequences for several filamentous fungal species, offers a unique opportunity to rapidly capitalize on the wealth of knowledge in Europe on filamentous fungi. EUROFUNGBASE will ensure that Europe grasps this opportunity by developing the platform for the development of a European fungal genomic-database, appropriate information systems, and standardization procedures. Furthermore EUROFUNGBASE researchers in the European biotechnological fungal research community will be trained in state-of-the-art techniques for using the database for their own genomics research. The CA program will provide the appropriate conditions by organizing a series of expert annotation jamborees, dedicated workshops, annual meetings to report on the research progress of individual EUROFUNGBASE partners and by facilitating participation in training courses in genomics.
